Hedge ESS Flow Battery Pilot and Demonstration

This project will install, test and deploy a 3.6 MW, 28.8 MWh energy storage system that uses ESS Tech Inc.'s iron flow battery technology at SMUD Hedge Solar Farm. The system will be built in two phases, with the first 1.8 MW to be constructed at Site 1B and the second 1.8 MW at Site 1C. SMUD will evaluate the capabilities of the technology to support their needs for resource adequacy, energy arbitrage and renewable support. A series of tests will be performed after the system is commissioned for a wide range of use cases to best utilize the technology for grid support.
